Today we present you our special selection our wine of the week: the VV wine of Casa de Oleiros.
The Young girls who fell in love used to embroider
handkerchiefs with a variety of motifs in fine linen or cotton cloth. The
origin of the “Valentine Handkerchief” is closely tied to the 17th and 18th
century’s exclusive “Manorial Handkerchiefs”, later adapted by the women of the
people thus making them very common. They belonged mostly to young people with
poor access to schooling; hence the spelling mistakes were the result of a
certain ignorance.
"Valentine hankerchiefs"
Once finished, the handkerchief would eventually reach the
possession of the beloved man that would wear in public as a way of showing
that he had begun a relationship. If he did not wear the handkerchief in
public, it showed that he had refused the young girl.
These embroidered handkerchiefs depicted verse, drawings and
some patterns symbolizing longing, absence and memory and a is a piece of
craftsmanship typical of Minho, the heart of Vinho Verde Controlled Designation
of Origin (CDO) region.
